Why do so many Indians apply coconut oil to their hair?

There are many hair oil promising sleek, strong from Garnier to Pantene to the list can go on and on, but we can’t help but wonder if old traditional practiced by our mother, her mother (nani/dadi) and generations before could be the real key to getting strong, shiny hair.

To know the truth we had to dig deep and did a bit of a research and found that traditional oil contains calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium which acts as a healer for damage hair and help strengthen it. Whereas Pantent has Aqua, sodium, sodium chloride, sodium benzoate, EDTA, Glycerides, Butylphenyl, Chloride, Benzyl Alcohol, Cinnamal, Magnesium Nitrate,Fumaric Acid. There are a lot of chemicals which has side effects and can damage the hair to a great extent.

The research really was an eye opener, I dig deeper and started reviewing the comments from various online portals to which I honestly wants to confess I did find a lot of good comments about coconut hair oil and found way more bad impression about shampoos and conditioners. It took my beautician 10 hours to get all the knots out of my hair and by the time she was finished 3/4 of my hair was on the floor. But oh wait this is not the worst part, my face especially the left side and above my eye, eyelid is burnt because as I was trying to get my hair loosed, water mixed with the shampoo was dripping onto my face and by the next morning my face was red. And today you can see all the burn marks.

On going through the research, well I was a bit confused initially what to use but now I have boiled down to Coconut hair oil and will definitely avoid shampoo and conditioners.

So there is process of using coconut hair oil unlike shampoo which is used just before bathing.
When our mother was our age, she had waist-length, strong and shiny hair. She use to take utmost care by braiding her hair to avoid split ends, and quite often, her mother would oil her hair at night, braid it and wash out the oil in the morning.

The result was a lifetime of thick, strong and super-glossy hair. This can possibly be the least icky, least expensive and most effective.

It was an anecdote of when to use, now we will give a detailed picture of how to go about it.
  1. Your hair should be completely dry, or the oil won’t hang on and won’t penetrate inside.
  2. Make sure to do it before you go to bed so your hair can “marinate” all night because, walking around with oil-drenched hair during the day can be uncomfortable and pollution will  play a reverse game.
  3. Comb through your hair to get rid of any knots or split ends.
  4. Set yourself up with a bowl of coconut oil and a towel.
  5. Dip a corner of the cloth in the oil and completely saturate it. Then start from your roots of the hair, one section at a time.
  6. To help spread the oil evenly, use the comb to pull it through to your ends.
  7. Once you’re done, secure your hair in a clip if you have short hair, or braid it if it is long.While sleeping it can get knots or damaged.
  8. After waking up in the morning, give yourself some extra shower time. Here you can use shampoo to remove all the oil but skip a rich conditioner to avoid weighing it down.
  9. Blow dry your hair gently.
