Haldi or Turmeric is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of ginger family. Amba haldi is also known as Curcura aromatic. Haldi is native to eastern Himalayan region and is cultivated in India for its use as a spice, medicine and dye purposes. TRADITIONAL USE: Haldi has played an important role in spiritualism. The robes of monks were traditionally colored with a yellow dye made out of turmeric. Because of its yellow orange color it was considered sacred.It’s also used in Hindu ceremonies and called ‘Haldi ceremony’ which means yellow on the body. It is used on the bride and groom a day or two before the wedding applied by friends and family. This turmeric paste softens the skin and gives one required natural glow for the wedding. The distinctive yellow hue is also used in many Konkan and southern regions for embellishment on body, clothing and utensils. In Ayurveda practices, turmeric has been used to treat a lot of internal disorders such as indigestion, throat infections, common colds, bronchitis, asthma treatments, and liver ailments and also helps cleanse wounds or skin sores.
